August 24, 2024Did you know that the kitchen is the most important room in the home? Yes, it is more than just a place to cook and eat — it’s the center of the home. The Ultimate HUB; the command center. The place where the day begins with a cup of coffee and ends with a midnight snack. It is the main place where the family congregates connects. The place where everyone somehow gravitates to when we entertain. As you can see, we spend a good percentage of our time in the kitchen. So, when designing your kitchen you should create a space that helps you to live your life the way that you want to. Your kitchen should be functional, warm, and welcoming. A space that is conducive for family members and friends to gather. A space that truly reflects your style.
Here are FOUR tips that will help you to design that stunning kitchen that you, your family, and guest will enjoy.
- Cabinets: Selecting the right kitchen cabinets is an important decision when designing your kitchen. First determine the style then the color. This will determine the tone of your kitchen. Next consider the storage you will need by selecting the type of cabinets that will help you to function in your kitchen effectively. So it is worth to think about your lifestyle and how you intend to use the kitchen when you select the cabinets. Before designing a kitchen for my clients, I get to know how they operate in the space. This really helps me to answer that most important question: “What type of cabinets will they need to function while showcasing their style?”
- Countertops: While every aspect of a kitchen design is important, the choice of countertop material is particularly important. Your countertop really makes a big visual impact. But before selecting, make sure you consider the different characteristics of each type of material to make the best choice that fits your lifestyle. Different countertop materials provide different levels of utility, durability, and cost effectiveness. Not only do you want it to be gorgeous but you want to select a surface that balances beauty with practicality.
- Flooring: Your kitchen floor also determines your kitchen style. So be creative. But keep in mind, it needs to be practical too. Think about your lifestyle to consider what is best. For example, while hardwood flooring is warm and welcoming and natural stone is gorgeous and stunning in a kitchen, neither hardwood or natural stone are easy to clean and maintain. Tile however is a wonderful option because it is undeniably easier to clean and maintain. Plus you have so much to choose from. Again, the key is to select a floor that will allow you to live and function the way you want to.
- Lighting: Lighting is important in any space. But it is especially important in the kitchen. You have different levels of lighting: task, ambient, and accent.. Pendants are great for over your sink or island. Wall sconces, perfect for accenting the architectural details. Chandeliers are perfect for over a table or gathering space. Recessed lighting is perfect for the overall space. And finally cabinet lighting helps to create that ambience. Keep in mind that lighting is what really makes a kitchen a place where everyone wants to gather.
So it is a must to consider these four items when designing a stunning kitchen. But let’s not stop there. Here are a few additional touches that you can implement that will also make you kitchen design scream WOW.
The Backsplash: To some the backsplash is an after thought after a kitchen is almost complete. But the backsplash is something you should think about when you are selecting the countertop. The backsplash provides an opportunity for you to bring additional personality into your kitchen. You can do a simple subway or go wild with patterns and designs. It’s your kitchen and your backsplash, so let your creativity show.
Area Rugs: Area rugs add a nice soft touch to a kitchen. They add pattern and color that will really make the space pop. Place an area rug under the table in the kitchen or where you prep your meals.
Window Treatments: Window treatments for kitchens are optional, but they add that special touch creating a warm welcoming atmosphere. You can add cell shades, shilloettes, or roman shades. Your window treatment doesn’t have to cover the entire window. A soft valance will work adding color, texture and warmth to the space.
As you can see there’s magic in transforming a kitchen. It’s about creating a space that resonates with the heart of the home. Everyone’s lives are centered around the kitchen. Whether it’s large or small, the kitchen just isn’t a space where we make our meals; it’s where everyone wants to be if they’re home or entertaining. It’s the central part of our lives. So create a space that reflects the overall style of your home. You have the opportunity to truly tailor your kitchen to your personal needs and lifestyle. So, design a stunning kitchen that is aesthetically pleasing, functional, warm, and welcoming. But most of all a kitchen that truly reflects your style that you, your family, and guest will enjoy.
